Clones is located less than 1 kilometre from the Border with Northern Ireland, 20 km from Monaghan and 25 km from Cavan along the N54 national road, which links Belfast to Galway. The bus stop is located on 98 Avenue, Clones. Daily services are available to Dublin, Monaghan, Cavan and Enniskillen.

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) the third level institution for the region is located less than one hour’s drive from Monaghan. The town is also accessible to a range of other third level institutions, both north and south of the border.
